49ers and Cavenagh ‘can have no excuses’ after Thomson revelation

Rangers fans are still on a high from the news of the club’s takeover by the 49ers group.

The takeover was confirmed in May. The leader of the consortium Andrew Cavenagh has spoken impressively in all media interviews.

However, it’s not all going perfectly behind the scenes at Ibrox.

Thomson has no idea whether he’ll have a job next month

Former Rangers player Kevin Thomson is now coaching Rangers’ Under-18s side.

His contract is set to expire on 30 June.

And, in an interview with BBC Radio Scotland (21 June), he revealed that no one at the club has spoken to him about his future.

He said: “As of yet, I’ve not really had much dialogue with the club. I’m just waiting to see what’s what.

“Moving forward, if there’s an opportunity there, then brilliant. If there’s not, then you know what I’m like, I just bash on and keep grafting away.”

The 49ers group been focusing on the key tasks facing them when they took over at the club.

They have appointed Russell Martin as manager. They are helping their new manager to build a Rangers team that’s capable of competing with Celtic.

However, it seems like important discussions with other staff members have been left to the last possible moment.

Thomson made 107 appearances for Rangers between 2007 and 2010, scoring three goals.

49ers group can have no excuses

The 49ers group can have no excuses when it comes to running a football club properly. This isn’t their first rodeo.

They have been the controlling owners of Leeds United since 2023, and they’ve done a pretty job, at least from the outside looking in.

So, stories like this from Thomson shouldn’t be occurring. There should be processes in place to handle things like this at all levels of the club.

Thankfully, there don’t seem to be too many stories like these coming from elsewhere at the club.

That’s good because poor management can affect morale at the whole club, even if it doesn’t directly concern the first team

You only have to look at stories about Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS, and their budget cuts at Manchester United. So many ex-players are saying that it’s poor culture killing the club above anything else.

Culture is set by the owners and seeps all the way down. The 49ers must take care to instil a winning culture at Rangers from the very start.

Thomson may not by a major player at Rangers, but he deserves to know if he will have a job come the end of next week.
