Rangers piece of history ‘sells for just £16,000 at auction’

Rangers’ position as one of the most historic clubs in world football is still firmly established even in the modern game.

The Bears remain a giant of UK football, even if their recent fortunes haven’t reflected that of their glory days at times.

Countless jaw-dropping stars and magical moments have graced Ibrox over the years, and the club have remained a powerhouse of both Scottish and European football throughout the generations.

The Govan outfit aren’t short of silverware, having claimed 55 Premiership titles, and also tasted continental success in the old Cup Winners’ Cup. However, a key piece of their history has just been sold for a surprisingly low amount at auction.

Rangers’ nine in a row trophy has been sold for £16,000

Russell Martin is the latest man tasked with wrestling back control from Celtic after their period of recent dominance.

The Bhoys have claimed 14 of the last 15 Premiership titles, but there has been plenty of times when it has been Rangers who have ruled the roost in Scottish football.

They dominated in the 1990s, and that culminated in a famous night in Dundee in 1997, when Ally McCoist, Paul Gascoigne, Brian Laudrup and Co. secured Rangers’ ninth consecutive league title.

Their achievement that night saw them match Celtic’s record of nine consecutive league titles, and to this day, neither side has been able to stretch that to 10.

However, fast forward to today and the trophy that Rangers won on that famous night has been auctioned off.

The acclaimed piece of silverware went under the hammer on Thursday (19 June) less than a mile away from Ibrox, and was sold for just £16,000, according to David Edgar’s Heart & Hand podcast.

Rangers must knock Celtic off their perch

Celtic’s most recent title has lifted them level with Rangers at 55 league titles apiece, and with four consecutive titles now having made their way to Parkhead, it is crucial that Martin can knock Celtic off their perch.

He is expected to be well-backed by the Rangers board this summer, in what is likely to be a total revamp at all levels of the club as the new era begins at Ibrox.

Kevin Thelwell will be charged with working with Martin to get a squad in place that is capable of challenging their city rivals, and, as ever at such a huge football club, there is massive pressure for them to succeed.

Philippe Clement’s reign was pretty disastrous, but now Rangers fans have reason to believe that better times could be right around the corner.
