Rangers ‘lessons to be learned’ after official Mulligan announcement

Rangers fans have been promised a new era of professionalism in the transfer market under the ownership of the 49ers group.

However, a new announcement regarding transfer target Josh Mulligan has a familiar stench of disappointment surrounding it.

Although the details behind this announcement remain unclear, there are still lessons to be learned by the Gers’ recruitment team.

Dundee contract still on the table for Mulligan

Josh Mulligan was rumoured to be completing his medical at Ibrox last week – one of the final steps before sealing a transfer.

Mulligan is available on a free transfer as his contract at Dundee is expiring. The midfielder is 22 years old, and would make a promising addition to the Rangers squad

However, that medical was later proven to be smoke and mirrors, as no official announcement regarding the signing of Mulligan was made.

Now, on Tuesday (17 June), Mulligan’s club Dundee has announced in a statement that a contract offer remains on the table.

Although the Scotsman has yet to sign a new contract, this is the clearest sign yet that Rangers were unable to get the deal over the line.

Rangers need to be more assertive in the transfer market

Rangers fans aren’t privy to all the details surrounding this proposed move for Mulligan. He could yet be revealed as a Rangers player.

Yet, this is another sign that the club needs to be more assertive in the transfer market.

With the greatest of respect, Old Firm clubs should be able to bully other Scottish teams in the transfer market.

They should have the allure and the financial muscle to attract the best players from the rest of the SPL without all of these complications.

Rangers have already had success signing Lyall Cameron on a pre-contract agreement.

This might have been unrealistic in the case of Mulligan, given that the Rangers takeover has just been completed, but that’s the sort of assertiveness that supporters would like to see from the club moving forward.

Instead, there appears to be a lot of hesitation, as fans still await news of the first new signing of the 49ers era.
