Rangers ‘to be ruthless’ with no-brainer Cyriel Dessers transfer at Ibrox
Cyriel Dessers could potentially end his stint at Ibrox as Rangers prepare for a new life under Russell Martin.
AEK Athens have been linked with the Nigeria international, and it seems like a matter of time before a deal is finalised.
Dessers was the leading goalscorer at Ibrox this season, scoring 29 times in all competitions for the Gers.
While some might argue letting someone with the 30-year-old’s numbers may be a risk, it feels like the right time to move on from him.

Dessers should be sold by Rangers this summer transfer window despite goal contributions
Dessers should be sold by the Gers despite his goal contributions at the Gers in recent seasons, Gary Keown says.
The Scottish Mail journalist believes the Light Blues have a no-brainer decision to sell the Nigerian striker in the coming weeks, even though he has been pivotal at Ibrox.
Appearances | Goals | Assists |
55 | 29 | 7 |
Keown feels the 30-year-old isn’t the right person to lead the line at the Glaswegian outfit next season, with his drawbacks apparent.
The journalist wrote in the Daily Mail (15 June): “That Dessers should be sold is a no-brainer. Be sure, 51 goals from 109 outings over two seasons is not to be sniffed at. It is a very good return. Without going over old ground, though, this is simply not a guy you can have as your main man up front. The eyes tell you that, even if the statistics don’t.”

Russell Martin should rely on Hamza Igamane at Ibrox next season
Dessers shouldn’t be Russell Martin’s first-choice number nine at the Gers going into the upcoming campaign.
The 30-year-old has frustrated fans over the years with his profligacy, and the Light Blues have a great chance of offloading him this summer.
It makes sense for the Bears to capitalise on the interest in the Nigerian ace in the coming weeks, as he isn’t getting any younger and his value will likely decline next year.
Rangers have Hamza Igamane in their ranks, and it would make sense for Martin to trust the youngster, who can still learn a lot.
The Gers may have one of the brightest prospects in the Scottish Premiership on their hand who may fetch them a hefty profit with the proper guidance.
If Dessers is sold, the Bears should sign a backup centre-forward, as Danilo’s consistent fitness issues make him unreliable.
Kevin Thelwell is taking charge of his first transfer window at the Glaswegian outfit, and fans are eager to see what the new sporting director is capable of.
Selling the 30-year-old striker may be the easiest call for the Bears, but it remains to be seen whether they will make it.
