Russell Martin to let another Rangers star leave after Cyriel Dessers

Russell Martin is set for a busy few weeks at Rangers, dealing with the futures of his own players while also bringing in new ones.

Thus far, the former Southampton boss has not made his first signing as Gers manager.

Martin is understood to be pushing the Ibrox hierarchy to bring in Conor Coady from Leicester City as he aims to strengthen his defence.

Cyriel Dessers is understood to be on his way out of Rangers, with his replacement already being eyed up.

Robin Propper expected to allowed to leave by Russell Martin

Robin Propper moved to Rangers last summer and, despite inconsistent performances, played over 40 games in all competitions.

However, whenever everyone in defence has been fit, he has not been among the first names on the team sheet.

Under Philippe Clement as well as Barry Ferguson, the 31-year-old has not performed up to the standards required of a title-winning team.

According to the Scottish Sun (13 June), he is edging closer to an exit this summer.

It’s understood that FC Twente are willing to shell out north of £1million to sign Propper.

He’s set to hold talks with Martin, who is expected to green-light his permanent departure.

Rangers cannot be signing players like Propper in the future

Rangers should reconsider signing players like Propper, whose skill set, while strong in the Eredivisie with Twente, struggles in the Scottish Premiership’s unique demands.

At 31, his experience as a ball-playing centre-back doesn’t fully translate to the SPFL’s physical, fast-paced battles, where his disciplinary record suggests adaptation issues.

His desire to leave Ibrox, with Twente eyeing a bid, underscores a potential mismatch.

Instead, Rangers need a robust, SPFL-ready defender, akin to a prime Connor Goldson, who thrives in aerial duels, handles physical strikers and leads under pressure.

A younger, dynamic centre-back, comfortable with direct play and quick transitions, would slot seamlessly into the XI, bolstering Gers’ title challenge while aligning with the league’s relentless intensity and physicality.
