Josh Mulligan transfer twist emerges after medical update at Rangers

Rangers looked close to signing their first player this summer transfer window in Dundee midfielder Josh Mulligan.

The Scotsman was reportedly having a medical at Ibrox, beating Salford City to his signature.

Mulligan has shown his versatility at Dens Park over the years, playing in multiple positions, including right-back.

While James Tavernier remains Russell Martin’s captain at the Gers, a replacement is arguably needed, and the 22-year-old Scotland Under-21 international felt like a decent option.

Rangers didn’t hold medical for Mulligan transfer

Mulligan didn’t undergo a medical at the Glaswegian outfit on Thursday, Josua Barrie says.

A report from Ibrox Noise claimed (12 June) that the Light Blues were closing in on a £1million deal for the Scottish national, with a medical already underway.

However, Barrie has revealed the truth regarding the 22-year-old’s transfer, and it appears the Ibrox faithful may have to wait for their first signing under the new ownership.

Speaking on the Rangers Review (13 June), the Scottish journalist said: “The story that he was having a medical yesterday, we don’t believe that’s true.”

Tavernier replacement needed at Ibrox after Martin appointment

Tavernier’s reputation among the Ibrox fanbase has declined over the years, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see Martin make him a key part of his starting lineup next season.

The Gers don’t have many options at right-back, with Dujon Sterling struggling with consistent fitness issues in the current campaign.

While the 25-year-old Englishman showed promise at the Light Blues after being played at centre-back, he spent most of his time on the sidelines in recent months.

Rangers also have Ridvan Yilmaz at their disposal who can play on the right-hand side of the defence, but the 24-year-old was strongly linked with an exit in the winter transfer window, and it remains to be seen how his situation unfolds in the coming weeks.

A new right-back should be one of Kevin Thelwell’s priorities this summer, and while Mulligan may be a rather unorthodox option, he could prove to be a game-changer.

The 22-year-old played a pivotal role at Dundee this season, and his versatility could arguably come in handy for Martin at Ibrox.

While it may be disappointing for the Gers fans to learn that the Scottish youngster seemingly hasn’t undergone a medical, his situation is still one to keep an eye on.
