Luka Modric medical scheduled as ‘crazy Rangers transfer saga nears conclusion’
Luka Modric was linked with a sensational switch to Rangers earlier in the transfer window.
The Real Madrid star is set to leave the Santiago Bernabeu after a 13-year spell with the Spanish giants.
The 2018 Ballon d’Or winner has won four La Liga titles, six Champions League trophies and and two Copa Del Rey’s in the capital but is set to move on this summer.
The 39-year-old was reportedly set to follow Davide Ancelotti to Govan but the Italian did not end up getting the job.
Modric set for medical amid Rangers interest
Modric’s signature would have been a major coup for the Gers, even with his advancing age, as he would transform the Scottish Premiership side.
However, a report from Sky Sports (12 June) claims that the veteran will join AC Milan once the Club World Cup is over.
It states that he is set to undergo a medical after completing the tournament with Los Blancos, meaning he will not be moving to Ibrox.
Rangers were never going to sign Modric
It was never a realistic possibility that the former Tottenham star was going to make the move to Auchenhowie.
Guillem Balague shut the rumours down almost immediately once they had surfaced and with the likes of Milan interested, it would have been a hard sell anyway.
Regardless, it will provide encouragement to the Gers faithful that they were linked with one of Europe’s most recognisable stars.
However, whether they are still touted with moves for some of the elite players in the game remains to be seen now that Ancelotti is out of the running for the managerial role.
Russell Martin was appointed instead and it remains to be seen what kind of influence that he will have in the transfer market.
One thing is for sure, new majority owners, the 49ers Enterprises group and Andrew Cavenagh need to ensure that he is backed to make his stint in Govan a success.
While they may not tempt Modric to take the plunge into Scottish football, there is still vast improvements to be made and they can still lure ambitious targets to the blue half of Glasgow.
