Cyriel Dessers exit moves forward at Rangers, he is ally of possible new team

Cyriel Dessers’ Rangers future has been subject to widespread debate in recent months.

The Nigerian striker finished as the top scorer in the Scottish Premiership last season despite the dismal campaign in all competitions for those in blue.

However, Dessers has often been linked away from Rangers, with there being a belief at Ibrox that they can attract a better striker.

The number nine has consistently underperformed in Europe, which has cost the Glaswegians multiple times, and he looks to have taken a step closer to the exit.

Dessers ‘wants move’ to AEK Athens

One team that has taken an interest in Dessers is AEK Athens.

The Greek outfit have been linked with the striker for weeks as they look to improve their attacking options, with little progress seemingly made.

It was said that AEK Athens could make a “big” bid for Dessers to bring him to the Mediterranean club.

Now, according to reporter Kostas Ketsetzoglou via Sport FM (11 June), the striker is keen on the switch, which is now moving forward.

This is a complete U-turn, with reports in May suggesting that Dessers would reject a move to Greece in favour of staying in Scotland.

However, the report now claims that AEK have the 30-year-old as an “ally” as he aims to make the move across the continent.

Rangers must let Dessers go this summer

Whether Dessers moves to AEK Athens or elsewhere, Rangers simply must let the striker go this summer.

The Nigerian international isn’t getting any younger, and this could be the last chance the Gers have of making any money on the striker.

On top of this, Dessers has proved to be extremely cocky in recent weeks as the interest builds up.

Hopefully, Russell Martin acknowledges that the striker is simply not the player to take Rangers forward next season and lead the front line, with a new era underway.

A new attacker will no doubt be needed to replace him, but with the wealth the 49ers and Andrew Cavenagh have, this should not be an issue.

Yet, whatever happens, the situation needs to be solved as soon as possible ready for the upcoming Champions League qualifiers.
