Barry Ferguson open to new job away from Rangers – Exclusive

Rangers are set to embark on a new era under Russell Martin after putting a rather dismal 2024-25 campaign behind them.

Philippe Clement oversaw a disastrous first half to the campaign and was made to pay when sacked by Rangers in February.

Barry Ferguson was a surprise option to replace Clement until the end of the season and it was suggested he may have stayed on for longer.

However, after a mixed set of results across his two-and-a-half months at the Ibrox helm, it was announced Ferguson would not be staying on as manager.

Instead, Martin saw off competition from Steven Gerrard and Davide Ancelotti to become Rangers’ latest boss.

Ferguson has returned to his previous behind-the-scenes role at the Glasgow giants, but it may well be that he departs if another offer arises.

Barry Ferguson open to managing at other Scottish club

Ferguson will forever have Rangers in his heart, having both managed and played for the Light Blues.

However, Ferguson has had a fresh taste for managing – having previously had spells with Clyde, Kelty Hearts and Alloa Athletic – and that may be a route he once again goes down.

That is according to brother Derek Ferguson, who exclusively told Ibrox News: “It’s always hard to say, but he really enjoyed being the figurehead.

“He’ll go back to his ambassadorial role for now, and if things don’t go well with this next appointment, of course he could fill in as caretaker manager again. It could well be a job for life.

Barry was obviously really disappointed not to have got the manager’s job full-time. He was initially brought in with the intention to help out.

But once you get your feet under the table, get your feet on the grass, it whets the appetite. Maybe now he has a different outlook if something else comes up.

There are a number of jobs out there in Scotland and you never say never. He put together a good coaching team and the likes of Neil McCann and Billy Dodds will look to get back into the coaching side of things.

Barry handled the job really well while he was there, and it looked like it was working. You’re left to wonder what could have been in the long term, but it wasn’t to be. Uou may well see Barry and the other boys in another job in the future.”

Rangers begin new chapter under Martin

Martin’s appointment was not universally accepted by Rangers fans, with many preferring to have instead gone down the Ancelotti route.

It was not to be for Ancelotti, though, and every fan now needs to get fully behind Martin.

As for Ferguson, fans will hope to see him remain at Ibrox in some capacity, but if he decides that there are better job offers elsewhere, nobody would begrudge him moving on.
