Rangers amateur hour as Russell Martin unveiled in embarrassing Blue Room footage
Rangers have finally ended their manager hunt as Russell Martin is unveiled by the 49ers.
The hunt for a new boss in the Ibrox dugout went on for months after Philippe Clement’s sacking in February.
Davide Ancelotti and Martin were the favourites, and the Englishman has now pipped the Italian to the post. However, Rangers’ introduction of the former Southampton boss to the media was far from impressive.

Rangers embarrass themselves with ‘strange’ Martin unveiling
Patrick Stewart and Kevin Thelwell were believed to be central to Rangers’ hiring process.
Therefore, when Martin was unveiled in the Blue Room, both were present to introduce the Englishman to the media. However, footage of the scene quickly went viral as criticism arose.
Premier League | Wins | Draws | Losses |
Russell Martin | 1 | 2 | 13 |
Chris Jack posted a clip via X (5 June) of the unveiling with Stewart and Thelwell sitting alone at a desk with a creased cloth thrown over the top.
They then welcomed Martin into the room, with an awkward exchange taking place before photos were taken by the media.
The whole scene was simply embarrassing from Rangers.
From the tablecloth being creased to the lack of excitement in the room, the whole introduction was extremely amateur. After all the build-up that had gone into the appointment, the exchange felt extremely forced, which was completely unnecessary.
If these are the standards that the 49ers are setting, it could be a concerning first few months at Ibrox.
Rangers need to show that they are a top club
The scenes at Martin’s unveiling wouldn’t have looked out of place lower down in the Scottish pyramid.
Therefore, for a club as big as Rangers, it is simply unacceptable. The Gers need to work on their image over the next few years to increase their prestige and attractiveness.
How a club is portrayed online and in the media can be vital, and Rangers must show they are a top side. If they can do this, they will be one step closer to ending Celtic’s dominance.
