Russell Martin cuts short holiday in Spain amid Rangers news

Russell Martin has ended his holiday early in order to complete a move to Rangers.

The Englishman looks set to be named as the Gers’ head coach after over four months without a permanent boss in the dugout.

It was Barry Ferguson who took interim charge from February onwards, with the ex-midfielder now being replaced by another former Light Blues ace.

A move to bring Russell in at Ibrox appears to have taken a step closer to completion after his holiday in Spain was ended early.

Martin ends holiday to complete Rangers move

It looks as if the Govan club have finally found the man to take up the mantle on a permanent basis after Philippe Clement was sacked.

This comes after weeks of reports with Davide Ancelotti and Steven Gerrard also linked with potential moves to lead the Gers into the new campaign.

Now, it seems that the 49ers and Andrew Cavenagh have made a decision after reaching an agreement with Martin over the vacant role in G51.

Talks with the ex-Southampton boss are said to be in the final stage as confirmation of the deal expected to be announced in the next 48 hours.

With that being said, The Scottish Sun have now reported (4 June) that the 39-year-old will now cut short his holiday in Spain to travel to Glasgow and finalise a deal.

This comes after the Englishman was told by Rangers that the job was his after a series of talks with the new hierarchy.

Rangers set to appoint Martin

With the 49ers coming in, there was hope that bringing in a new head coach would be done quickly and efficiently at Govan.

This seemingly didn’t put pressure on Kevin Thelwell and Gretar Steinsson, who were willing to assess their options before making a decision.

As a result, the likes of Gerrard and Ancelotti were assessed at length before ultimately opting to bring in Martin ahead of the Scottish Premiership season.
