Davide Ancelotti in middle of ‘major plot twist’ over who’ll be next Rangers boss

Rangers’ manager hunt is finally set to come to an end after months of searching.

The 49ers’ takeover at Ibrox was confirmed last week, which had sped up the hunt to find Philippe Clement’s successor.

Russell Martin and Davide Ancelotti were the favourites for the Rangers job, with both managers boasting impressive CVs.

However, it appears that Ancelotti has now missed out on the role in a major late twist.

Ancelotti’s interest in Rangers ‘cooled’ amid imminent Russell Martin appointment

Martin is now set to become the new Rangers manager after successful talks with the 49ers.

The former defender formerly played for the Gers on loan back in 2018 and will now make his return to Ibrox in the dugout.

However, Ancelotti was the favourite for the Rangers job for weeks, and speculation has already begun on why he missed out.

According to Keith Jackson via the Daily Record (4 June), Martin has become the front-runner for the Rangers job following a “major plot twist” from Ancelotti’s camp.

The report states that over the last two days, the Italian’s interest has “cooled” in regards to moving to Ibrox.

The former Real Madrid coach was in pole position after a series of talks, but Ancelotti proceeded to stall on the move at the start of the week.

This may be because Como’s Cesc Fabregas has been linked with the Inter job after Simone Inzaghi left on Tuesday.

Rangers were right to move on from Ancelotti

After months of searching for a new manager, it would have been a tragedy if the Gers had appointed someone who is not 100 per cent committed to the job.

Ancelotti stalling negotiations is a massive red flag, especially as the Italian is yet to be a full-time manager.

While Martin’s impending appointment might not go perfectly, it is miles better to have someone who is committed to their job and clearly wants it.

Hopefully, the Englishman now proves his doubters wrong and send the Gers back to the top of Scottish football.
