Rangers told ‘to seal new Nicolas Raskin contract’ after what he has done at Ibrox

Rangers have a busy summer ahead of them after the 49ers Enterprises completed their takeover at Ibrox.

The new owners are yet to appoint a new manager, although Russell Martin looks to be on his way to Glasgow, with a deal agreed.

Once in place, the new team will have to get straight to work in preparation for the new campaign, in the hope of pushing much further next season.

Kris Boyd backs Nico Raskin at Rangers

While baby steps will have to be taken to build a sustainable project, there is plenty of work that can be done to get going.

Naturally, the new boss will be eager to bring in new faces, although there could be several departures, too.

One man who has been linked with a move away this summer is Nico Raskin, after finishing the season with Rangers in sensational form.

The midfielder’s contract runs until 2027, which could put some pressure on the Gers to cash in now.

However, Kris Boyd has urged his former side to try and extend his deal instead.

Speaking live on the Go Ballistic podcast (2 June, 17:14), Boyd said: “For Rangers, I would be looking at getting definitely Raskin on a, what’s he got two years left? But you don’t want him going into next summer when he’s only six months out of contract, especially now he seems to be in the Belgium squad more regular.

“He’s been getting minutes on the pitch, so it’s not as if he’s just making up the numbers there as well.

“He seems to be thriving on, dare I say it, the main man at Ibrox right now. He seems to be thriving on that and from Rangers’ point of view, they’ll be looking to continue that when he comes back.”

Rangers have to keep hold of Raskin

Although supporters want to see new faces come in at Ibrox this summer, there has to be a level of continuity too.

Raskin was awarded this season’s player of the year award, showing how crucial he is to the Light Blues’ efforts and this has to be one contract where they are willing to push.

Increased investment in the Govan club shouldn’t just be reflected in the transfer market, but also in keeping key players in the squad who can be part of the spine going forward.

Raskin offers plenty for the Gers, and if a deal to keep both parties happy can be struck, he will no doubt have a big part to play next season.

With Mohamed Diomande also already linked with a move to the Premier League, the new owners and manager will need to put their priorities in order soon.

It could keep Raskin in Glasgow that little while longer.
