Steven Gerrard ‘regret’ shared at Rangers ahead of new manager appointment

Rangers are still in the process of appointing a new manager at Ibrox.

As Andrew Cavenagh and the 49ers Enterprises completed their takeover of Rangers over the weekend, identifying a boss will now be a matter of urgency.

There have been several names linked with the hot seat at Ibrox, including Steven Gerrard, Davide Ancelotti and Russell Martin.

Gerrard regret shared as Rangers move off

Although it looked as though a Gerrard return to Rangers was on the cards, the former boss ruled himself out of the race, opting to stay in Bahrain instead.

Ancelotti and Martin are now leading the race, and a decision is expected to be reached very soon, allowing further work to get underway in preparation for next term.

The potential appointment of Gerrard caused debate at the time, with some arguing that it was uninspiring to return to a previous boss.

However, others argued that bringing in someone who has proven success would be a good start to getting the Gers back on track.

Speaking to the Daily Record (2 June), Dave King admitted he regretted ever parting ways in the first place.

He said: “We had to break away from that. It’s something I thought we had with 55, keeping Steven Gerrard on board and defending the title.

“I really thought we’d turned the corner, but unfortunately, it was decided to take Steven out of the picture.

“I regret that, but it is what it is. We are where we are.”

49ers have to look forward with Rangers

The new investors seem to be debating over who to appoint as the new manager, with some confusion, with several names still in the running.

It’s understandable given Martin has more experience, but Ancelotti has the clear links to high-profile managerial teams through his dad.

From King’s perspective, it’s clear why parting ways with Gerrard was a regretful one, especially considering the misery that came afterwards.

But, that was his decision to move on.

However, the 49ers are in place at Ibrox to embark on a new era and the best way to show that is by moving forward.

All eyes will be on Glasgow in the coming days with supporters patiently waiting for an announcement over the managerial vacancy and once this is decided, progress should start to follow.

Growth is likely to be slow and measured under the 49ers, ensuring that a sustainable model is put into place, but in comparison to recent times, it should be very positive.

The key is to bring ambition back to Rangers, looking to push further towards Celtic in the Scottish Premiership to close the gap.

In the near future, the Gers will want their hands on the title, with someone new at the helm.
