Andrew Cavenagh and Rangers board applauded as Rangers sack now approved

Andrew Cavenagh has wasted no time in getting underway in his work after taking the reins at Rangers.

The American investors have plenty of work to do in preparation for the new campaign, both on and off the pitch, after their takeover was confirmed.

While catching up with Celtic in the space of one summer is an ambitious task, the new owners will know the importance of making significant progress and showing positive signs.

Nils Koppen exits Rangers

Although players in Light Blue have come under criticism for their failure to deliver regularly this season, troubles off the pitch have hindered Rangers, too.

The outgoing regime has let supporters down when it comes to transfer business, with recruitment not being up to scratch.

Not only were the levels of some players below par, but deals were often being struck that left the Gers with little to cash in.

Cavenagh clearly identified this as a key issue too, as Nils Koppen is already on his way out of Ibrox, despite the takeover having only been completed this weekend.

Keith Jackson feels this is a masterstroke of a move, though, representing the positivity the new regime can have.

Writing in the Daily Record (2 June), he said: “That they have identified Nils Koppen as part of the problem rather than the solution – and by relieving the bungling Belgian of his duties as head of recruitment over the weekend – they have taken a shrewd first step.”

There is plenty of work to be done at Ibrox, and supporters will have to be patient as they look towards better times.

Rangers have work to do to improve next season.

As Jackson says, this feels like a strong first step. Not only are Cavenagh and the board showing a ruthless nature, which puts the interests of the club first, but it also shows a clear move away from the previous regime.

The wrongs of the past few seasons can’t be put right in the space of one window, but if progress can be made and ambition is shown, that will surely be the right way to get supporters on side.

There are bound to be further exits from Ibrox, as well as some exciting arrivals, with the likes of Jamie Vardy being linked with a Rangers move.

The 49ers will be hoping that their work will pay off to bring enough progress in time for the new campaign.
