Rangers enter last-gasp Francesco Farioli talks as new manager twist drops at Ibrox

Rangers have held talks with ex-Ajax boss Francesco Farioli for the vacant managerial role at Ibrox.

After what was a disappointing campaign, Rangers will be keen to right their wrongs next season, though much of that will come down to what they do this summer.

Recruitment at Ibrox is going to be crucial, but those plans are likely to be put on hold until they have a manager in place, with a fresh update shared from Glasgow.

Farioli emerges as Rangers candidate

With a huge summer ahead, it is imperative that Rangers make the right call when it comes to the managerial situation at Ibrox.

Several names have been linked, with Andrew Cavenagh set to hold talks this week, but a report from the Herald Scotland (29 May) states that the Gers have now held talks with Farioli.

The Italian resigned from his post at Ajax after a disappointing campaign in Holland, though he isn’t expected to be out of work for long, and the Light Blues may be able to offer him an immediate route back into management.

Farioli had been linked with jobs back in his home country, with Roma and Atalanta among those rumoured, and had been in talks over a move to Glasgow back in 2022.

The report adds that the 36-year-old was sounded out as an option last week, and for a new name to emerge at this point is very, very late.

Rangers have no margin for error this summer

Rangers simply haven’t looked like a side capable of competing with Celtic, and without the right planning and decisions this summer, that won’t change.

The Light Blues need to recruit well, but until they know who will be in the dugout next season, players will be deterred by the idea of making a move to Ibrox.

Farioli would be an excellent appointment, and with his links across Europe, it could open some very exciting doors for the Gers to recruit foreign talent, though it all hinges on the outcome of the talks.
