Dave King wants Rangers new manager talks with out-of-work boss – ‘I know him well’

Rangers’ search for a new manager looks to be coming to a conclusion.

The Light Blues seem to be close to appointing Davide Ancelotti, with the Gers board set to accelerate talks with the Italian in the coming days.

However, a former figure of the Ibrox hierarchy has urged them to consider an alternative target before they press ahead with their decision.

Rangers urged to appoint Gerrard again

Steven Gerrard is a contender for the vacancy, given his previous success, lifting the Scottish Premiership title in the 2020-21 campaign.

Former Gers chairman Dave King wants the Govan outfit to approach the Liverpudlian over a return to the dugout, believing that he would jump at the chance.

Speaking to the Scottish Sun (28 May), he said: “I’d be very surprised if they haven’t spoken to him because Steven is the obvious choice.

“I know him well enough to fairly accurately state it would be unfinished business for him.

“Steven left at a time he didn’t want to leave. That’s a fact. He wanted to defend that title. I think he would have defended the title had he stayed.”

Gerrard return would be a concern for Rangers

If 49ers chiefs were to sign off on a return to Auchenhowie, it would be a very different Gers side to the one that Gerrard built last time.

The current squad is miles behind arch-rivals Celtic in the league table and there is a huge rebuild needed to get the personnel up to scratch and he never faced a side that was as strong as the one that Brendan Rodgers has at his disposal right now.

The former Liverpool midfielder would bring the feel-good factor back to Ibrox and has already has an understanding of how it works in Govan but it would still be a concern despite his high-pressing 4-3-3 system bringing dynamic, attacking football back.

His stints since leaving have not exactly been encouraging, he struggled to replicate his success in Scotland with Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq, so it would be a risky appointment given his recent record away from the Bears which suggests that he has not improved as a manager.

Paraag Marathe and Co should move on to a more ambitious name, and leave the past behind as they need to ensure that the next man in the dugout is the right one, otherwise, they could go backwards before they go forwards.

It would be disastrous if their reign started with the wrong appointment and Gerrard would be exactly that.
