Rangers key figure jets into Europe as Ancelotti images surface

Rangers are edging closer to making a call over the future of a permanent manager at Ibrox.

Although the 49ers aren’t expected to complete their takeover until mid-June, the new investors are keen to get things in place so they can hit the ground running.

Several names have been linked with the position at Ibrox, but it is Davide Ancelotti who is the favourite once more, as the search ramps up.

Andrew Cavanagh heads to Ibrox for talks

Although the 49ers are yet to take charge, people on the ground, including Kevin Thelwell and Gretar Steinsson, have been taking charge of the managerial hunt.

Andrew Cavanagh has made multiple visits to Rangers already, though, most recently on the final day of the season, and now he’s set for a return.

According to the Daily Mail (28 May), Cavanagh is keen to meet any potential new manager face to face, before making a call on an appointment.

The report states that the American will fly into Europe this week to hold further talks with Ancelotti about the vacancy, while a chat with Russell Martin is also on the agenda.

Ancelotti’s wife has shared images on social media of her family on holiday, suggesting that the Italian is not engaged in current talks.

However, he is expected to meet up with Cavanagh when he flies in later this week, to hopefully put an end to the search at Ibrox.

Cavanagh has to be convinced by Ancelotti

There has been plenty of speculation surrounding the hot seat at Ibrox and of the three main contenders, Ancelotti is the riskiest one.

Steven Gerrard has already won something with the Gers, proving he knows what it takes to get to the levels being aimed for.

While Russell Martin struggled in the Premier League with Southampton, the 39-year-old has solid experience, having worked his way up the English football pyramid.

For Ancelotti, this would be his first role standing by himself and while that could be exciting, there may be a lot of unanswered questions going into it.

It’s a positive sign that Cavanagh is keen to meet the manager himself before a final decision is made, but he has to come away from talks feeling fully convinced by the candidate to give the Light Blues the best chance of progression next term.
