Ferguson doesn’t hesitate as he reacts to Ancelotti appointment news at Rangers
Rangers have seemingly whittled their search for a new manager down to three names.
Ten days on from confirming Barry Ferguson will not be staying on at Ibrox, the search for a new number one continues.
It has been widely reported that one of Davide Ancelotti, Russell Martin or Steven Gerrard will take charge at Ibrox in the coming days.
Andrew Cavenagh is jetting into Europe this week to finalise an agreement, with an appointment expected before the end of the week.
And if a reveal by esteemed Spanish journalist Guillem Balague is anything to go by, Ancelotti could be the man who is appointed imminently.

Ancelotti backed to take Rangers forward
Hiring Ancelotti, much like Martin and Gerrard, has many pros and cons. The biggest criticism aimed the Italian’s way is that he is inexperienced at senior level.
While it is true Ancelotti has not managed a team outright, he has still worked with some of the world’s top clubs, most recently Real Madrid alongside father Carlo.
And Rangers-mad pundit Derek Ferguson, speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, believes he is the strongest candidate of the three.
Club | Role |
Paris Saint-Germain | Fitness coach |
Real Madrid | Fitness coach |
Bayern Munich | Assistant manager |
Napoli | Assistant manager |
Everton | Assistant manager |
Real Madrid | Assistant manager |
Asked which candidate he would hire, Ferguson instantly responded: “Ancelotti.“
Ferguson went on to add: “I’ll back whoever is appointed, but the more I think about Ancelotti, in terms of his contacts, the level he’s coached at, his father, for me it points towards his direction.
“Gerrard’s been here and done it, but Ancelotti also knows what it’s like coping with the pressure. At Real Madrid, you’re expected to win every game or else it’s not good enough. So he gets it.
“Martin would be bottom of the pile – that’s not a dig as he’s showed his credentials, but we need winning football and that’s why I look at Ancelotti.“

Rangers managerial appointment now imminent
It has been a long time coming, but Rangers will hopefully have a new manager in place in the next few days.
Some are annoyed at how long it has taken, but Rangers did ultimately have some time to play with.
All that matters is that the new man – whether that be Ancelotti or one of the others – is already up to speed with what needs to be done.
The Champions League qualifiers will be here before we know it, so the new man needs to make a fast start.
