Sutton and Boyd name one Rangers player in Team of the Season, Celtic dominate

Rangers endured a rather forgettable season as the Glasgow club finished 17 points behind rivals Celtic.

There was some salvation on the European front, as Rangers reached the Europa League quarter-finals, only to lose to Athletic Bilbao over two legs.

It is that time of year when people review the season just gone, and that is exactly what Kris Boyd and Chris Sutton have been doing.

As they compiled their Scottish Premiership Team of the Season, there was only room for one Gers man.

Selecting a Team of the Season can often be a subjective approach, given affiliations to players.

However, that has not been the case as ex-Rangers man Boyd, as he and Sutton shared their Scottish Premiership Team of the Season for Sky Sports (26 May).

Understandably, there was only room for one Gers player in a team dominated by Celtic talent.

Overall, seven Bhoys players made the 11, with Kasper Schmeichel, Callum McGregor, and Daizen Maeda among the names included.

Elsewhere, there was room for Hibernian duo Rocky Bushiri and Nicky Cadden, as well as Dundee’s Simon Murray.

The only Rangers player they could agree on was Vaclav Cerny, who enjoyed a solid season on the wing.

Rangers overhaul needed alongside Davide Ancelotti arrival

Boyd and Sutton’s Team of the Season told a story: the Gers need change.

Indeed, the Glasgow club are poised for change as Davide Ancelotti appears to be closing in on the Rangers manager position.

His appointment would be the first positive step the Ibrox club must take on the long road to redemption.

It is on the field where the Gers also need to add quality, as their team has not been fit enough to compete.

Changes are likely afoot, and supporters will hope that Ancelotti can use his established phonebook to bring in reinforcements.

With much work to do, Rangers will aim for a different outcome when the Team of the Year is revealed this time next year.
