Brian Priske ‘set to join Rangers’ as new manager as move elsewhere breaks down

Rangers are reportedly closing in on a deal to hire Brian Priske as their new manager.

Priske, 48, has been out of work since being sacked by Feyenoord in February, but the Danish manager has title-winning experience from his previous spells in charge at FC Midtjylland and Sparta Prague.

Rangers have been lining up new managers since sacking Philippe Clement in February.

Barry Ferguson took interim charge between then and the end of the season. However, the former Rangers midfielder will not be staying as the permanent Ibrox manager after setting unwanted records in the Scottish Premiership.

Rangers close in on hiring Priske after Wolfsburg update

BBC Sport reported on Saturday (24 May) that Rangers have held talks about hiring Priske as their new manager.

However, news from the Netherlands has followed that up to suggest that the Gers’ interest is more advanced.

Dutch football news website VI did a report about the former Feyenoord manager, citing BBC Sport’s report.

However, they add that Priske is now “set to join Rangers” after links with the managerial vacancy at Bundesliga side Wolfsburg came to nothing.

Who is Rangers manager candidate Brian Priske?

Priske has had quite an impressive managerial career despite it only starting off in 2019.

At Midtjylland, he won the 2019/20 Danish Superliga title and in the season after, he went to lead the team to the Champions League group stages.

His spell at Antwerp – and Feyenoord – didn’t go well but at Sparta Prague, he won two Czech league titles, the Czech Cup and reached the last 16 of the Europa League before losing to Liverpool.

While he was at Sparta Prague, Priske called Clement an “amazing person” and a “good coach” ahead of a 0-0 draw between the two sides in the 2023/24 Europa League group stages.

Priske’s managerial career has seen him win league titles at Midtjylland and Sparta Prague.

In his playing days, he made 24 appearances for Denmark, playing Euro 2004 in Portugal alongside ex-Rangers striker Peter Lovenkrands.

He also featured for the likes of Genk, Club Brugge and Portsmouth as a defender.

Priske has now been out of work since February and linked with the role at Wolfsburg.

But this latest update by VI suggests that he’s close to being the new Rangers manager with the interest from Germany waning.
