Rangers sources speak out amid imminent next manager announcement talk

Rangers have been heavily linked with several different managers, but an announcement may still be some way off.

Steven Gerrard has been linked as a frontrunner for the role, while other targets have been spoken to.

Rangers need to replace Barry Ferguson in the dugout, and want a top option whom they can build a project around and rebuild the squad with.

Davide Ancelotti has also been linked, but contrary to reports suggesting that an appointment could be imminent, the Gers have been keen to downplay these links.

Rangers insist manager appointment is not near

49ers Enterprises are closing in on a takeover of Rangers, and are already playing a part in the search for their next manager, but this is not set to be announced anytime soon.

Keith Jackson has now reported via the Daily Record (22 May) that sources within Rangers have insisted that nothing is close to being confirmed with regard to their managerial search and targets.

New director Kevin Thelwell, and 49ers Executive Gretar Steinsson are said to be leading the search for the new manager, but they are yet to decide their favourite option.

Rangers have spoken to Gerrard and Ancelotti, but neither can be considered frontrunners yet, with the club insisting that there is little chance an agreement is reached this week.

Rangers need to secure next manager quickly

Rangers are taking their time and choosing their candidates carefully, but they know that they cannot wait around forever before deciding which option to pursue.

Southampton were reportedly interested in Gerrard, and they will need to ensure that they beat the Saints to the chase if they decide to bring him back to the club.

Ancelotti has also been linked with Como, and the Real Madrid coach is in high demand. If Rangers wait too long, they may find they miss out on another target.

Hiring the manager as soon as possible will also allow the club to begin planning the transfer window, and will allow him more time to get his ideas in place before pre-season, meaning a decision will need to be made quickly over which candidate they will offer the job to.
