Rangers new manager: Last man standing emerges as saga nears end

Keith Jackson has delivered an update on Rangers and their hunt to hire a new manager this summer.

Barry Ferguson has left the club as his stint as interim manager came to an end.

His tenure yielded mixed results after he was brought in to steady the ship post the sacking of Philippe Clement.

Steven Gerrard appears to be the last man standing

Daily Record’s Jackson admits that there has been contact and conversations with Gers and Gerrard over a reunion.

He’s also unwilling to counter suggestions that the Liverpool legend may be the last man standing in the race.

The likes of Davide Ancelotti and Russell Martin have been mentioned and spoken to in recent days and weeks.

It’s understood that Gerrard may have asked for a little bit more time to work on his family situation.

Jackson believes that he is the frontrunner to become the next permanent Gers boss.

Jackson said on 21 May at 3:42: “We think there has been contact and conversations. There is a suggestion that he is the last man standing, the preferred candidate. I’m not even going to counter that.

“What I’m being told is that Steven Gerrard may have asked for just a little bit more time to have these discussions to work out his family situation.”

Ancelotti is a better option for Rangers

Ancelotti presents a compelling case as a managerial choice for Rangers over a Gerrard return due to his fresh perspective and extensive high-level coaching experience.

At 35, Ancelotti has worked under his father, Carlo, at clubs like Bayern Munich, Napoli, Everton and Real Madrid, gaining deep tactical knowledge and exposure to diverse football philosophies.

His cerebral approach, multilingual skills and familiarity with modern coaching methods align with Rangers’ need for a progressive manager to challenge Celtic and restore European stature.

While Gerrard delivered a title in 2021, his recent managerial stints at Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq were underwhelming, suggesting stagnation.

Ancelotti, though untested as a head coach, offers a bold, innovative option with no prior baggage at Ibrox, allowing a clean slate to rebuild the squad.

His enthusiasm for the project signals ambition, making him a calculated gamble for Gers’ future.
