Steven Gerrard sources react to Rangers hire news amid major Russell Martin update

Russell Martin has decided whether to be the next Rangers manager, as Steven Gerrard continues to be linked to Ibrox.

Kevin Thelwell spoke with Barry Ferguson earlier in the season, and the Gers have decided to part ways with the interim manager despite his seeming willingness to continue.

Gerrard has emerged as a leading contender at Ibrox, but Martin has also been linked with the top job at the Light Blues.

With the Glaswegian outfit arguably in a hurry to appoint a new head coach after playing their final game of the season, they’ve now heard back from two managerial contenders.

Martin out of running for Rangers job as Gerrard appointment not imminent

Martin is unlikely to be the next Gers manager as he’s close to joining Leicester City, according to the Daily Mail.

The news outlet reports (21 May) that while Gerrard is the front-runner to be appointed at the Light Blues, a deal at Ibrox isn’t imminent at this stage.

It’s been claimed that the Liverpool icon is interested in returning to the Glaswegian outfit, but it remains to be seen how long it’ll take to hire him.

Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises will undoubtedly want someone to be in the Bears’ hot seat before their arrival, with the takeover taking some time to complete.

Kevin Thelwell needs to appoint Gerrard soon at Ibrox

Gerrard have been heavily linked with a return to Ibrox, but the 44-year-old has asked the Gers for some time to make a decision [Record Sport].

Kevin Thelwell is leading the search for Cavenagh and the 49ers, and it’ll be interesting to see who he deems fit to lead the Light Blues next season.

The US consortium’s takeover has taken a fair bit of time, and the fanbase has now grown weary of the Bears’ lack of initiative.

Rangers must make an appointment soon, with the upcoming transfer window arguably needing the input of whoever the new manager will be.

The Gers have struggled to succeed in the Scottish Premiership since Gerrard’s departure, which may be why the prospective new owners are leaning towards his return.

Martin struggled at Southampton this season as they were relegated from the Premier League, and his move to Leicester could potentially be a blessing for the Light Blues.

Thelwell will undoubtedly have a big say in who the new manager will be at Ibrox, considering the recruitment strategy will revolve around it.
