Steven Gerrard lines up Ibrox favourite as first Rangers hire after appointment

Steven Gerrard is primed for an extraordinary return to Rangers, with talks set for the next couple of days.

Gerrard will replace Barry Ferguson, who has been in temporary charge of the Ibrox club since late February.

With the wheels in place for Gerrard’s return, it appears he will be bringing a familiar face with him to the dugout.

Former Rangers man Steven Davis set to join Gerrard

The Rangers manager saga has taken a key twist, with Gerrard now the frontrunner to take the job in Glasgow.

It had seemed like Davide Ancelotti, son of Carlo, was going to take the role and was a clear favourite for a while.

However, there have been conflicting reports on whether he truly wants the job, which raises commitment concerns.

With Ancelotti’s chances of managing in Scotland drifting, Gerrard is now the clear favourite at Ibrox.

In a move that will gain serious attention, he looks set to bring former Gers favourite Steven Davis with him, according to the Daily Record (20 May).

Davis has been touted as a potential member of Gerrard’s coaching staff alongside Ajax man Jordan Henderson, who also wants to continue playing.

The former Northern Ireland international is no stranger to the Ibrox dugout, having been in caretaker charge for a fortnight in 2023.

Gerrard worth another shot for Rangers

While getting back with your ex is never advised, a Rangers return for Gerrard is worth a punt.

Although his time in Saudi Arabia did not go as planned, his previous stint with the Glasgow club should not be sniffed at.

In just over two years with the Gers, he guided them to their first Scottish Premiership title in 10 years.

Not only that, but he made Rangers a force in Europe, something that has continued long after his spell.

It felt like the former Liverpool man was building something special at Ibrox, only for his time to come to a premature end.

Gerrard has unfinished business with Rangers, and going up against his former manager, Brendan Rodgers, would be iconic.

Of course, there are talks to get through first, but an Ibrox return for Gerrard would be nothing short of sensational.
