Ianis Hagi offered bizarre contract guarantee by European club after Rangers exit

Ianis Hagi is leaving Rangers with his contract expiring at the end of the season, but he will not be short of options.

Rangers announced the departure of several players from Ibrox on Tuesday (20 May), with the campaign having come to an end and sights set on next term already.

The Gers need to appoint a new manager in preparation for the new season, with an appointment expected soon to resolve the rest of the squad issues.

Hagi may also have his opportunity for life post-Rangers sorted, though, with a new option on the table.

Hagi given contract offer amid Rangers exit

With Hagi’s contract at Ibrox coming to an end, his exit from Rangers is not the most surprising.

The 26-year-old has done well for the Gers, making another 24 Scottish Premiership appearances this term.

However, the relationship between the two parties was seemingly coming to its end and the Romanian international is now looking at new options.

Moves to Genoa and Borussia Monchengladbach have already been mooted, with Europe looking likely to be the destination for Hagi.

However, a new offer has been put on the table, with Steaua Bucharest owner Gigi Becali keen to bring the player back to Romania.

In quotes reported by The National (21 May), Becali has launched an offer with a unique guarantee in the contract, which would see Hagi starting in every European game next season.

The owner said: “I want Ianis Hagi so much. He’s the best footballer in Romania.

“Sure, it would cost me about £1million, but we would have a far better chance of playing Champions League football with Ianis in our team.

“I’m a realist and of course I realise Ianis would be difficult to get.

“But I would be prepared to offer him a contract guaranteeing him he would start in every European game we play.

“I will speak to his father Gheorghe Hagi and see if this is a possibility.

“We’re working on the transfers. We’re preparing it in advance for next season.”

Hagi to look at other options

It’s an ambitious move from Becali to consider getting Hagi back in Romania, and the chief knows that with the big guarantee he has offered to include in a contract.

However, it seems unlikely that the 26-year-old would take that move, when there are better prospects on the table when it comes to a standard of football.

The road may have come to an end at Ibrox, but Hagi is certainly a player who has talent and given his age, it is too early in his career not to be taking the best offer that comes up in terms of footballing levels and abilities.

Not every exit from Rangers has gone down so well, with Leon Balogun outspoken in his disappointment in the way things were handled.

However, Hagi is no doubt ready to look forward, knowing he has the options to consider this summer.
