Rangers new manager shortlist revealed by sources as talks held

Rangers have reportedly drawn up a shortlist for their next permanent manager, with an appointment expected in the coming weeks.

Barry Ferguson has left Ibrox after his remit as interim manager came to an end post the final game of the season.

In his last match in charge, Ferguson saw his Gers side being held to a 2-2 draw against Hibs.

Steven Gerrard talks held as shortlist is down to three

Steven Gerrard has been linked with a famous return to Glasgow, still the last manager to coach the Blues to a league title.

According to Sky Sports’ Anthony Joseph, Gers have spoken to numerous candidates, including Gerrard and Davide Ancelotti.

While no decision has been made, both remain firmly in the running to take over the reins at Ibrox for next season.

TEAMtalk’s sources claim that there is a three-man shortlist drawn up by the club, which includes Russell Martin as well as Ancelotti.

A decision is expected in the coming days, with the search understood to be progressing well.

Rangers must not consider Gerrard’s return without assessing all candidates

Gerrard’s potential return as Gers manager carries both pros and cons.

On the positive side, Gerrard’s previous tenure from 2018 to 2021 was transformative, leading Rangers to their 55th Scottish Premiership title in 2021, ending Celtic’s dominance with an unbeaten league season.

His global reputation as a Liverpool legend could attract high-calibre players, and his high-pressing 4-3-3 system suits Rangers’ need for dynamic, attacking football.

The Liverpool legend’s familiarity with the club and fanbase could restore stability and re-energise Ibrox.

However, his abrupt exit to Aston Villa in 2021 left some of the Ibrox faithful feeling betrayed, potentially complicating trust.

His subsequent managerial stints at Villa and Al-Ettifaq were underwhelming, raising doubts about his ability to replicate past success.

The current gap to Celtic, who are excelling domestically and in Europe, poses a significant challenge, and without Michael Beale’s tactical input, Gerrard’s effectiveness might be diminished.

Financial constraints and high expectations could further complicate his return, making it a risky appointment despite his proven track record, so it’s important that all options are considered.
