Barry Ferguson immediately reacts to ‘breaking Rangers manager news’
Barry Ferguson was quickly told he would not be the next permanent Rangers manager this week.
The Gers legend improved things slightly at Ibrox in the final months of the season, after taking the job on an interim basis following Philippe Clement’s sacking.
However, despite plenty of debate surrounding the permanent role and suggestions, it was announced that he had left Rangers hours after the Scottish Premiership season concluded.
With the 49ers looking to complete a takeover at Ibrox, the American investors are keen on starting afresh and bringing in their own appointment.

Ferguson’s reaction to Rangers’ exit shared
Although Ferguson initially came back to Ibrox temporarily, taking the Light Blues as far as the Europa League quarter-finals represents a decent spell.
For many inside Ibrox, the appointment also proved to be a boost for the morale of supporters, which can be as crucial as improving things on the pitch at times.
Ferguson always stood by the fact that he didn’t know what his future would hold, but given how much he loves Rangers, it’s no surprise that he was disappointed by the news.
Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show (19 May), Craig Moore revealed how Ferguson reacted to the news, saying: “I did manage to get a hold of Barry once I heard the breaking news, and it’s fair to say he was disappointed.
“He felt very empty, because he felt he could do a real job. He had a real clear vision of what he could do and what needed to be done, but by all accounts, the decision-makers at Rangers want to go down a more experienced path.
“So, it will be interesting to see what that is in terms of who that particular person is. I think the one word that maybe I still don’t think the new people, they still think Rangers is a project. And Barry was very clear, as I am and I’m sure a lot of Rangers supporters are, Glasgow Rangers is not a project club.”
49ers have to nail Rangers appointment
Ferguson did well during his tenure at Ibrox, despite battling with difficult circumstances and rightfully has received credit for the work he did.
You can understand why the 47-year-old was disappointed to find out he was leaving Ibrox, especially based on some impressive results.
However, when you look at the spell as a whole, it coincided with some ever-so-familiar disappointing failures, so Ferguson would have been a risk.
Rangers final 5 games | |
Hibernian (A) | 2-2 |
Dundee Utd (H) | 3-1 |
Aberdeen (H) | 4-0 |
Celtic (H) | 1-1 |
St Mirren (A) | 2-2 |
Nevertheless, if the 49ers are going to justify the decision to part ways with a fan favourite, it has to be backed up by success on the pitch immediately.
With the season finished, all eyes are on matters regarding the new owners, and they have to ensure that their tenure starts on the right foot, showing that change is coming.
