Ferguson blown away by Ancelotti info he’s been told amid Rangers appointment latest

Rangers have upped their search for a new manager after confirming Barry Ferguson will not be staying on at Ibrox.

The Gers thanked Ferguson for his three months of service in a club statement on Sunday (18 May), with the former skipper returning to his position as an ambassador.

Ferguson could yet be handed a prominent position behind the scenes at Rangers, but that all depends on which direction the new manager chooses to go.

Davide Ancelotti remains the strong favourite to succeed Philippe Clement as Rangers’ next permanent boss, with reports from Spain suggesting his appointment is now close.

And while Ancelotti may lack any sort of experience when it comes to senior management, there is also plenty to be excited about.

Derek Ferguson welcomes Ancelotti appointment news at Rangers

Ancelotti is the son of legendary manager Carlo and has worked alongside him in various positions.

That includes assistant manager at Bayern Munich, Napoli, Everton and most recently Real Madrid, with the Ancelotti set to depart the Spanish giants in a week’s time.

Ancelotti has worked closely with arguably the greatest manager of all time, and that is something that excites former Gers player Derek Ferguson.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, Ferguson – the brother of Barry Ferguson – mentioned something he had heard about the Italian’s time at English Premier League side Everton.

“I’ll be honest. At the start I wasn’t so sure about this appointment,” he said. “I wanted a manager with experience, who’s been there and done it.

But as time’s gone on and I’ve thought about it, yeah, I’ve come around to that way of thinking.

“The reason I say that is because I’ve heard certain things about him, about how he deals with players. At Everton he was taking training, for example.

“So yeah, I think it’d be a good appointment.”

Rangers could announce new manager this week

It has been suggested that Rangers could make an announcement on their next manager by the end of this week.

The search is also said to be down to two names, but exactly who that second name is beyond Ancelotti is less certain.

The likes of Russell Martin, Steven Gerrard, Sean Dyche and Gary O’Neil have also been mentioned, but it is very much looking as though Ancelotti will be the man who oversees the start of a new era at Rangers.
