Dermot Gallagher reacts to controversial Hibernian v Rangers footage

Rangers endured a costly refereeing decision against Hibernian as the pair drew 2-2 in the Scottish Premiership.

The Glasgow side took the lead early on through Cyriel Dessers, but Nicolas Raskin had a goal ruled out at 1-0.

Indeed, the ball appeared to cross the line, and Rangers boss Barry Ferguson did not hold back his frustration.

Gallagher addresses Rangers flashpoint

Although there was nothing to play for, the Ibrox club would have been livid at what happened at Easter Road.

A one-goal lead is never secure, but a two-goal margin would have gone a long way to helping Ferguson’s side claim victory.

To make matters worse, Hibs went straight up the other end and scored to make the game level.

When Raskin’s effort crossed the line, it seemed clear as day that the ball had gone in, but the referee was not certain.

Ultimately, the goal was not given, and the only sprinkle of salvation is that the moment was not too costly.

As ex-referee Gallagher discussed the footage live on Sky Sports News (19 May, 11.43am), he agreed the ball had crossed the line.

He said: “It does look over the line and there’s no doubt about that. They haven’t got GDS, because they think they can incorporate it into their VAR system.

“If you look at that, the answer was they had no conclusive evidence that it was over the line, but it certainly does look over the line.”

The Gers have significant summer ahead

There is much to fix at Ibrox if Rangers are to close the gap on bitter rivals Celtic.

The race for the league title, if you can call it that, concluded some time ago with the Glasgow club well short.

Firstly, the Scottish outfit must get their next managerial appointment right so they can build stability moving forward.

Philippe Clement was given the boot in February, with Ferguson taking charge until the end of the season.

Ferguson has had a mixed time at Ibrox and has been vocal about landing the job permanently, but he will be overlooked.

Davide Ancelotti had been the favourite for some time, but it appears he is set to reject the Ibrox club.

As for players, investment is needed in Glasgow, but the Gers must hold on to their best players too.

Dessers is the league’s leading scorer and has been linked with an exit, but Rangers must keep hold of him.

With a seismic summer approaching, the Ibrox club has work to do if they are to re-establish itself as Scotland’s best.
