Rangers have now taken another step closer to finding their next permanent manager, with the season now concluded.

Barry Ferguson’s time as interim manager has now officially come to an end, with a 2-2 draw away at Hibernian his final game in charge.

Rangers will now seek to hire a new permanent head coach, with Philippe Clement their last hire before Ferguson, and there is a name in mind.

Real Madrid assistant Davide Ancelotti has been heavily linked with the role, and an update on this pursuit has now emerged.

Rangers closer to Ancelotti after Ferguson decision

Rangers have confirmed that Ferguson will depart following his interim role, and a successor will be announced in due course.

With Carlo Ancelotti’s son a front-runner for the role, it appears that he is edging closer to Ibrox.

Spanish outlet Marca (18 May) have now reported that Ferguson’s departure has brought Ancelotti “closer” to Rangers.

There has been a mixed response to rumours linking Ancelotti with the job, but whatever decision is made, clarity can be expected soon.

Ancelotti a gamble for Rangers

Many are sceptical of Ancelotti’s potential move to Rangers, given his lack of experience as a head coach despite his experience as an assistant.

However, the Italian is held in high regard, having worked at some of the biggest clubs in the world, and has taken a more hands-on approach on a day-to-day basis than his father.

Ancelotti’s status in the game could also see him bring top young talents from Real Madrid to Ibrox, and with other clubs also interested in him, landing him would be something of a coup.

The 35-year-old will need to be given backing in the market, but securing their next manager as early as possible will give him the best possible chance of success at Rangers.

The appointment will certainly be a gamble, but one which Rangers fans will hope pays off as they aim to win their first title since 2021.
