Barry Ferguson ‘set for significant new Rangers role’ after manager announcement
Barry Ferguson was relieved from his duties as Rangers manager on Sunday.
The Gers legend has done an admirable job since taking over from Philippe Clement on an interim basis in February.
The 47-year-old endured a mixed spell in terms of results and his hopes of taking over the Ibrox role on a permanent basis have been dashed.
The Light Blues announced on 18 May that Ferguson and coaches Neil McCann, Billy Dodds and Allan McGregor will no longer continue in their roles.

Ferguson set for new Rangers role
However, Ferguson could still upgrade at Rangers in a new role, rather than return to his ambassadorial position from before his stint as interim boss.
Daily Record journalist Keith Jackson (19 May) has claimed that he could be offered a significant new role behind the scenes, despite being kicked out of the dugout.
He said: “CEO Patrick Stewart and chairman Fraser Thornton have been so impressed at the manner with which Ferguson handled himself throughout that they will probably attempt to tempt him into taking on another position at the club.
“Something bigger, better and more significant than the ambassadorial gig he had been holding until he was asked to hold the fort on the back of Philippe Clement’s sacking.”

Rangers need to keep Ferguson around
Ferguson must be kept around by the Gers, to maintain the identity of the Govan club, something that was lost in Clement’s reign.
Although results were not necessarily the best under him, one thing was clear: he got the best out of several Bears players, including the likes of Nico Raskin and Cyriel Dessers.

His strengths clearly lie on the training ground, so a coaching role behind the new boss is surely the route to go down rather than a recruitment role.
Davide Ancelotti is expected to be the new man in the dugout, but the ex-interim man could definitely offer an easier transition into the role for the Italian, or whoever takes over, if he is still around.
The 49ers are set to back the new boss in the transfer market but Ferguson can help get the best out of the stars that are already at Auchenhowie in the meantime.
He deserves to continue his association with the club after stepping in when they needed him and guiding them to a semi-respectable campaign.
It will remain a mystery what he could have done if there was stability behind the scenes rather than the mess that he inherited from the Belgian when he took over.
