Michael Stewart blasts ‘slow’ Rangers midfielder over BBC Sportscene footage

Rangers’ 2024/25 campaign ended on Saturday after a 2-2 draw with Hibernian at Easter Road.

For many at Rangers, Saturday’s game was likely their last for the Glaswegians.

Barry Ferguson looks unlikely to stay at Ibrox ahead of the 49ers’ takeover, with Davide Ancelotti linked to the post.

The draw against Hibs was extremely disappointing and proved change was needed at Ibrox.

Now, Michael Stewart has highlighted Connor Barron’s awful defending in the lead-up Hibs’ second goal which ultimately cost Rangers all three points.

Stewart blasts Barron’s defending against Hibernian

The season has no doubt been a disappointment, with the Gers unable to challenge Celtic in the Scottish Premiership and have come away with zero trophies.

The match against Hibs was a sum-up of the campaign as Rangers lost the lead twice against the Edinburgh outfit and were forced to settle for a draw.

Multiple Rangers players were blasted for their performance, as they failed to hold onto yet another lead.

However, Stewart has picked out Barron after the midfielder’s “slow” defending cost the visitors a goal at Easter Road.

During his analysis for Hibernian’s second equaliser, Stewart told BBC Sportscene (17 May): “Rangers don’t defend this well enough. Nicky Cadden has got the best delivery in the country bar none.

“Tavernier gets drawn out of position, and Connor Barron is too slow, you can’t stop five yards away, you have to close him down.”

Rangers need a complete shake-up this summer

In recent weeks, it has become apparent that multiple players at Ibrox are simply not good enough.

It is completely unacceptable for Rangers to win only two of their final seven Scottish Premiership matches.

If the Gers are to challenge Celtic next season, they need a complete overhaul, with multiple harsh but needed departures.

The 49ers must be ruthless if domestic success is to return to Ibrox next season, and hopefully, the incoming manager sees this and takes action.

At present, there are simply too many passengers, and these need to be quickly rooted out with quality replacements brought into the Glaswegians.
