Rangers decide on Cyriel Dessers’ future as fresh Ibrox exit talk emerge

Rangers star Cyriel Dessers is attracting fresh interest ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Nigerian striker has been in great form for the Ibrox outfit recently, notching five goals in his last five matches and that has seemingly caught the attention of interested clubs.

The 30-year-old was heavily linked with an exit in the winter window with 10 clubs reportedly making offers for the Rangers ace but nothing materialised and he stayed put in Govan.

Greek top-flight side AEK Athens who eliminated Celtic from the third qualifying round of the Champions League in 2018, are the latest club to show interest in the Gers star.

Rangers want to keep Dessers amid Greek exit reports

Greek journalist Giannis Chorianopoulos reported on 16 May that the Super League outfit are “highly interested” in securing Dessers’ services.

However, another report from Sport24 journalist Ilias Kallonas (16 May) claims that the Gers want to keep the Nigeria international in Govan, rather than allowing him to depart.

Replying to a tweet claiming that the potential fee would not be too bad for the Greek side, he said: “I don’t think it’s so much a financial issue as it is the Rangers’ willingness to keep him on the roster after a season like this.”

49ers could allow Dessers to lead Rangers revival

The 49ers have a huge task on their hands when they take over at Auchenhowie, including a huge squad overhaul to decrease the gap to Brendan Rodgers’ side.

Dessers could be the spearhead of their plans, given his remarkable 28 goals and seven assists in 54 appearances in all competitions in a difficult campaign for the Light Blues.

He is often criticised for his prolifigacy in front of goal, missing crucial chances in huge games but he has proved to be a regular goalscorer even when the rest of the team is struggling.

The six-cap international has outlined his intentions to stay at Ibrox and it would be a hard task to cash in and then find a striker that can score more often than he does, despite his wastefulness sometimes.

If he remains in Glasgow and then thrives in the new era, it would mark a remarkable turnaround to a career in Scotland that seemed like it was over just a few months ago.
