Burgess exit on the cards with Ipswich contract running out

According to Rangers Review (16 May), Gers are keen on bringing Burgess to Ibrox in the coming weeks.

With his contract running out in the summer, an exit is on the cards for the Australia international.

The 29-year-old has been with Ipswich as they secured back-to-back promotions and also when they got relegated from the Premier League.

Rangers will be saving a fortune signing Burgess

Burgess would be a shrewd free transfer signing for Gers, bolstering their defence with experience and physicality.

Standing at 6ft 4, the Australian international, born in Scotland, is well-suited to the robust demands of Scottish football, offering aerial dominance and strength in duels.

His 18 Premier League appearances in 2024/25, despite Ipswich’s relegation, demonstrate his ability to compete at a high level, bringing valuable top-flight nous to Ibrox.

As a left-sided centre-back, Burgess addresses potential gaps, especially with Robin Propper’s struggles and Leon Balogun’s uncertain future.

His versatility to play in a back three or four aligns with Rangers’ tactical flexibility under interim boss Barry Ferguson or a new manager.

With over 200 EFL appearances, Burgess combines reliability with leadership, crucial for Rangers’ title challenge and European campaigns.

Signing him for free, requiring only minimal compensation, fits Rangers’ cost-conscious strategy amid a potential takeover, ensuring defensive stability without financial strain for the 2025/26 season.
