Sean Dyche ‘on Rangers shortlist’ as Kevin Thelwell gets to work

Rangers could potentially turn their attention to Sean Dyche as Kevin Thelwell is set to leave Everton for Ibrox.

The Toffees’ chief will join the Gers as their new sporting director at the end of the season.

Thelwell and Dyche worked together at Goodison Park before the English manager was sacked and replaced by David Moyes midway through the season.

The former Burnley head coach has been unemployed since then but may soon be hired by the Glaswegian outfit.

Rangers list includes Dyche after Thelwell appointment

Dyche could potentially be on the Gers’ shortlist to be their next manager after Thelwell’s appointment, Scott McDermott says.

The Scottish journalist would be amazed if the former Everton boss wasn’t being considered for the hot seat at Ibrox, with Barry Ferguson surely on his way out at the end of the season.

McDermott believes that, with the 53-year-old head coach having worked with the Light Blues’ incoming sporting director in the past, it’d be surprising for the Glaswegian outfit not to consider him.

Speaking on Hotline Live (16 May), the journalist said: “For that reason, having worked with Thelwell, you’d be amazed if [Dyche] wasn’t on Rangers’ list. He’s the new sporting director coming in. He’s worked alongside a guy like [Dyche], who is out of work. I’d be surprised if he wasn’t on the list.”

Ibrox faithful to have mixed feelings about Dyche

Dyche’s experience in the Premier League arguably would make him an appealing manager for the Gers.

The Englishman is best known for his more than nine-year spell at Burnley, during which he enjoyed relative success and led them into Europe.

With the 53-year-old head coach having a reputation for playing defensive football, some Ibrox faithful may be averse to his appointment.

Rangers need someone to compete with Brendan Rodgers next season, and Dyche’s style of play may not be best suited for that task.

Steven Gerrard was the last manager to stop Celtic from winning the Scottish Premiership title, but the Liverpool icon disappointed fans when he left for Aston Villa.

The prospective new owners have a duty to do what’s best for the Light Blues, but they also need to consider the fanbase’s opinions, who would undoubtedly like a top manager to lead the team next season.

Several names have already been linked with the top job at the Bears, but it remains to be seen who will be the next permanent head coach.
