Graham Spiers reacts to ‘Deplorable’ scenes spotted at Rangers after new statement

Graham Spiers has made his feelings apparent after the Rangers released a new statement in the wake of their win against Dundee United on Wednesday.

Rangers locked horns with Dundee United in the Premiership at Ibrox on 14 May in their final home game of the season.

Despite having a nightmare of a campaign, Barry Ferguson wrapped up the Light Blues’ term at G51 on a positive note, earning a 3-1 victory over the Tangerines.

It was a strong performance from the Glasgow giants, as a brace from Cyriel Dessers and a goal from Nicolas Raskin saw them overturn a one-goal deficit to claim all three points.

However, the finale at Ibrox was marred by a Dundee United supporter, who was spotted mocking the Ibrox disaster.

Spiers hits out at Dundee United fan after Ibrox antics

A man in the away section appeared to be holding up six fingers in reference to the 66 Rangers fans who lost their lives in the 1971 stadium disaster during a game against Celtic.

He was also seen pointing the ground in a bid to provoke the home supporters.

The Gers have since hit out at the said person’s antics, describing them as ‘deeply unsettling’, and demanding that action be taken against him [The Herald].

Meanwhile, Spiers has expressed his confusion over why fans resort to such lowly behaviour and dubbed the Dundee United supporter’s actions as ‘deplorable’.

“Why do football fans reduce themselves to these deplorable antics?”, Spiers wrote on his personal X handle (15 May).

Rangers demand action against individual

It is disappointing that this comes just days after a Celtic supporter was seen doing something similar during the Old Firm derby at Ibrox on 4 May.

Celtic were quick to take action against the said individual, banning him from Celtic Park indefinitely in the wake of his behaviour at Ibrox.

He was also fired by his employers as a result, while also being subject to a police probe.

It now remains to be seen what sort of action will be taken against the aforementioned Dundee United fan for his unacceptable behaviour.

Mocking tragedies remain a problem in British football, as evidenced by actions of several fans at different stadiums in recent months.
