Stephen Craigan confused by Rangers penalty drama in Dundee United win

Rangers beat Dundee United 3-1 on Wednesday evening to continue their positive run at Ibrox.

Barry Ferguson‘s side had gone seven home matches without victory before the 4-0 win over Aberdeen (11 May).

They recorded another win in Govan against the Tangerines but it was not without controversy as they were handed a penalty in the 73rd-minute.

Dessers penalty drama leaves Craigan baffled

Cyriel Dessers was the key man as the Gers picked up another victory to potentially end Ferguson’s interim reign on a high.

The Nigerian forward notched two goals, the second of which was from the spot, which were pivotal to the Light Blues’ picking up a great result at Ibrox.

Stephen Craigan was left confused by the drama surrounding the penalty after Mohamed Diomande was fouled by Will Ferry and VAR had confirmed the referee’s initial decision.

Speaking on BBC Sportsound (14 May, 21:19 pm), he said: “I thought it was going to be James Tavernier but it was actually Cyriel Dessers who stepped up for the penalty kick.

“He has a little pause, the goalkeeper is jumping about, trying to put him off, has a wee stutter and puts it past the goalkeeper.”

Rangers need to end the season strongly

Dessers and the majority of his teammates are fighting for their future at Ibrox with a significant overhaul expected in the summer.

The 49ers Enterprises group should complete their takeover in the offseason and there will be major changes to both the backroom staff and the playing squad as a result.

The Gers are miles behind Celtic

Davide Ancelotti is reported to be the main contender for the vacancy in the dugout if Ferguson departs, and could be set to bring the likes of David Alaba and Ferland Mendy to Auchenhowie if he is appointed.

That would represent a huge change in mentality and leadership for the Bears but could spell disaster for the likes of Robin Propper and James Tavernier, who could be set for an exit.

There is also huge uncertainty about the rest of the squad, Nico Raskin and Diomande could attract interest from south of the border and Hamza Igamane is also expected to have a significant amount of suitors when the transfer window opens.

It could be a very exciting summer for supporters and if the current squad want to be a part of the revolution, they need to impress as the campaign comes to a conclusion.
