Michael Stewart totally wrong over Dessers amid Rangers remark live on BBC
Rangers made it back-to-back Scottish Premiership victories on Wednesday as they overcame Dundee United 3-1.
It was a routine affair for the Gers in what could be Barry Ferguson’s final match as Rangers’ manager at Ibrox.
Despite going 1-0 down, Cyriel Dessers netted a brace before Nico Raskin bagged the hosts’ third.
However, the future of the Belgian attacker has been a hot topic after the match, despite him becoming the Scottish Premiership top scorer.

Michael Stewart tells Rangers to ‘upgrade’ on Dessers
Dessers’ two goals against Dundee United took the Rangers attacker to 28 goals in all competitions this campaign, with one match left to play.
This includes 17 Scottish Premiership goals, which now puts him above Celtic’s Daizen Maeda to lead the race for the Golden Boot.
Yet, despite these feats, Dessers’ future is unclear at Rangers this summer, with rumours circulating that the Glaswegians could sell the 30-year-old.
Cyriel Dessers’ goals this season | |
Scottish Premiership | 17 |
Europa League | 3 |
Champions League | 1 |
Scottish Cup | 3 |
Scottish League Cup | 4 |
Overall | 28 |
When analysing the match on BBC’s Sportscene show (14 May), Michael Stewart felt inclined to agree with these views, feeling Rangers “need to upgrade” their attacker.
He said: “Making the point about Cyriel Dessers, you look at just the data in terms of his goal-scoring and it would suggest that he is a top number nine striker.
“But I think everybody gets a sense after watching him for a few seasons now that something isn’t quite there.
“If Rangers want to go and challenge Celtic, I feel like they are going to have to get an upgrade for that position.”

Stewart’s take on Dessers is baffling
Coming out of the Dundee United match, Dessers was one of the few highlights.
In a poor game, the striker still managed to get two goals and ensure that the Glaswegians won their final game at Ibrox this campaign.
Stewart’s take on Dessers is completely wrong. The striker could end up with the Golden Boot at the end of the season, in a campaign which has no doubt been a failure for Rangers.
It would be baffling for Rangers to then sell this striker, who is a proven goalscorer in Scotland and in Europe, to then bring in someone who may not reach these heights.
Simply put, Dessers has proven over the last few games that he should remain at Ibrox next season, and it would be idiotic for the Gers to look to sell him now.
