Rangers told to ‘back out’ of Cortes deal after new Vaclav Cerny transfer twist

Rangers are set for plenty of change at Ibrox during the summer transfer window.

The 49ers Enterprises are pushing to complete a takeover in Glasgow, which could see investment increase going forward at Ibrox.

Within that, a new manager is expected to be appointed in place of interim boss Barry Ferguson, too.

As the season starts to come to an end for Rangers, though, there are plenty of decisions that have to be made over the futures of certain players, with new additions needed to achieve success.

Rangers urged to escape from Oscar Cortes deal

Supporters at Ibrox have not been too happy for some time now, largely as a result of the mismanagement by those at the top.

A core example of past mistakes is highlighted in the loan deal of Oscar Cortes.

The Colombian national signed for the Gers on a loan deal from Lens, with an obligation to buy for a fee that is reportedly around £4million for Rangers.

However, injuries have had a big part to play in the campaign and with just eight Scottish Premiership appearances under his belt, it’s fair to say his impact has been limited.

Speaking on the Go Ballistic podcast (13 May), Roger Hannah urged the Light Blues to turn their focus elsewhere, saying: “Can they get out of the Oscar Cortes deal because clearly now, Barry Ferguson does not fancy him at all.

“Philippe Clement didn’t really promote him into the team occasionally when he was fit. He doesn’t seem to be the answer.

“Vaclav Cerny interesting words yesterday, those were the first hints from Cerny that he might consider staying if something could be done.

“I think that would be far more palatable to Rangers supporters than the Cortes deal.”

Cerny the level Rangers need to be targeting

Whether or not the 49ers will be able to escape the deal they have already struck to buy Cortes at the end of the season is yet to be seen, but the new owners will certainly be keen to spend as little money on this as possible.

As Hannah says, Cerny has been a much more exciting asset this season and would be a good addition for the Gers permanently.

Cerny has been much more exciting than Cortes.

This is the reason why the new owners need to make a call on who their permanent managerial appointment will be as quickly as possible.

Ferguson has spoken about some of the uncertainty at Ibrox with the season coming to a close, something Cerny has alluded to himself.

Getting someone in place now could push a deal for Cerny to completion in time for the new season.

Meanwhile, any negotiations on Cortes certainly will have to wait for the new owners to complete their takeover, but it’s hard to see the 21-year-old having any future in Glasgow.
