Russell Martin makes decision as Rangers move to hire manager

Russell Martin is among a number of managers to be linked with the Rangers job that’s likely to be available this summer.

Barry Ferguson, the current interim boss, would want it on a permanent basis, but he’s not likely to be given it.

Martin reveals he’s rejected jobs post Southampton sack

Martin guided Southampton to Premier League promotion but after a disappointing top-flight campaign, he was sacked by the Saints.

Since then, he has been out of work and has found himself on a longlist with a number of managers for the Gers job.

Post him getting the sack at St.Mary’s, the 39-year-old admits that he did have multiple job offers, but he turned them down.

He said: “We’ve turned a few opportunities down because it just didn’t feel quite right and it’s about the opportunity it gives us, how we feel about it, the people you’re working for, all of it comes into account.

“Also, the cultural context, the style of play, how the style of play, the work that we do will fit the club.

“There’s a lot to take into account, but I’m really excited about what comes next and I’m enthused, energised and definitely ready to get going again.”

Rangers should target the league title next season

Martin’s potential appointment as Rangers’ manager could significantly enhance the current squad’s performance, positioning them to challenge for the Scottish Premiership title next season.

The Englishman’s possession-based, high-pressing philosophy, honed at Southampton, would maximise the technical abilities of players like Nico Raskin and Hamza Igamane, encouraging fluid attacking play.

His focus on structured build-up from the back could transform defenders like John Souttar into ball-playing assets, while his intense pressing style would suit the energy of wingers like Vaclav Cerny, provided he joins.

Martin’s track record of improving young talents, such as Southampton’s Kyle Walker-Peters, suggests he could elevate Gers’ emerging stars, including Bailey Rice, Connor Barron and even Lyall Cameron, fostering confidence and tactical discipline.

His ability to instil a cohesive team identity would address Rangers’ current inconsistency, as seen in their mixed 2024/25 campaign.

With the new owners likely to invest funds, Martin could strategically bolster the squad, targeting players suited to his system.

His experience in high-stakes environments, coupled with a clear tactical vision, could galvanise Gers to close the gap on Celtic, leveraging their Ibrox home advantage to secure the title in 2025/26, provided he adapts swiftly to the Old Firm’s unique pressures.
