Rangers set for ‘Huge’ takeover changes after strange Ibrox developments

Rangers ended their winless streak emphatically with a 4-0 victory over Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday.

The victory was Barry Ferguson’s first taste of success since late March when the Glasgow club beat Dundee 4-3 in the league.

With the planned 49ers Enterprises’ takeover deal at Ibrox near completion, the Scottish club will be striving to compete with old rivals, Celtic, for glory next season.

Rangers takeover to signal change

Rangers’ domestic campaign has been dead for some time, with Celtic officially crowned as league champions in April.

Furthermore, the Gers were dumped out of both the Scottish Cup and League Cup during Philippe Clement’s tenure earlier in the season.

The Europa League had provided them with some salvation, but Rangers were knocked out by Athletic Bilbao in the quarter-finals last month.

While presenting BBC Sportscene (11 May), host Jonathan Sutherland addressed the mood at the Scottish club following their win over Aberdeen, where empty seats were spotted.

He said: “A lot of empty seats at Ibrox here today, I guess that kind of tells the story of the whole season here at Rangers.

“It’s sort of a strange season, because we expect huge change at Rangers coming up, so it’s a bit of a holding pattern.

“Players like Vaclav Cerny, someone that, whoever comes in and takes over at Rangers, would want to keep hold of.”

Rangers face imminent Ferguson decision

Ferguson has been in temporary charge at Ibrox since late February, taking over from the departed Clement.

It has been a mixed bag for the former player, with five wins, four draws, and four losses during his 13-game reign.

Ferguson’s record as Rangers manager

The 47-year-old has been consistently vocal about his desire to land the job on a permanent basis, but the Ibrox club are primed to appoint elsewhere.

Steven Gerrard has been linked with a sensational return to Rangers after his time managing in Saudi Arabia came to an end.

Another name touted has been Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl, whose departure from South Yorkshire appears imminent.

More recently, the Gers have shown interest in Real Madrid assistant manager, and son of Carlo, Davide Ancelotti.

Given the number of reputable names under consideration to become the next Rangers manager, it appears Ferguson’s time in the Scottish capital is numbered.

The ultimate decision is who will take over from the 47-year-old when the season reaches its curtain call.
