Boyd urges Rangers to offer player new contract after what he’s seen

Rangers defeated Aberdeen 4-0 at Ibrox in their penultimate home game of the Scottish Premiership season.

But the Light Blues are set to witness plenty of change this summer, with 49ers Enterprises continuing to complete their takeover behind the scenes.

The Gers’ prospective owners will have to appoint a new manager in the off-season once Barry Ferguson’s interim spell comes to an end.

Rangers’ next boss will have to oversee a successful summer transfer window as the Ibrox giants strive to close the gap on Scottish Premiership champions and fierce rivals Celtic.

Boyd tells Rangers to renew Leon Balogun’s contract

Defender Leon Balogun is currently set to leave the Bears on a free transfer this summer, when his contract expires.

But when asked on Sky Sports Football [11 May, 2.18pm] if Ferguson’s men should offer the veteran defender fresh terms, Boyd said: “Yeah, I think they should.

“It’s easy to look at the age of a player, but you talk about leaders and people turning up to work – Balogun does that.

“He’s 37 next month… I go back to my time at the club, Walter Smith brought in Davy Weir and Ugo Ehiogu, who were two centre-backs who understood the pressures that come with moving to this football club.

“Balogun, if you’re that age and don’t play then play at the levels he does – including European games and against Celtic – it tells me he looks after himself.

“I don’t see why whoever it is in charge wouldn’t want to keep Balogun. Are you going to get 50 or 60 games out of him? No. It’s about managing his body, but you can’t buy experience, and he’s got that. He rarely lets Rangers down.”

Balogun proved his defensive solidity once more on Sunday, helping the Ibrox outfit maintain a clean sheet in their big win over Aberdeen.

Rangers can now enjoy a strong end to the season

The Light Blues’ campaign has been a largely disappointing one, which was reflected by the empty seats at Ibrox as Ferguson’s men hosted Aberdeen.

This season is one that the Rangers faithful cannot wait to come to an end, but the Bears’ second-half performance against Jimmy Thelin’s men shows that they can still end the term on a strong note.

With Sunday’s victory over Aberdeen, Ferguson has finally steered his side to a win on home soil in his interim tenure in the dugout.

But the Gers will now look to maintain that positive momentum heading into their final two games of the season, against Dundee United at Ibrox on 14 May and away from home against Hibernian on 17 May, respectively.

Rangers will be disappointed that they will end this season with no silverware to their name, but will hope for a brighter future once the 49ers’ takeover is complete and once their new boss is appointed.
