Gareth Southgate now backed for Rangers job in surprise twist
Rangers have endured a six-game winless streak amid their search for a new manager.
Interim boss Barry Ferguson was unable to steer the Light Blues to a victory over fierce rivals Celtic last time out, instead leading his side to a 1-1 draw at Ibrox on 4 May.
Rangers host Aberdeen on Sunday 11 May, and will be desperate to achieve their first home win since a 4-0 win over Ross County on 2 February.
While 49ers Enterprises are yet to fully complete their Bears takeover, the Glasgow giants have been linked with a move for the likes of Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl, who is set to leave the Owls.

Gareth Southgate backed to become Rangers’ next boss
Perhaps the Rangers faithful would be surprised to see former England manager Gareth Southgate in the Ibrox dugout next season.
Opponent | Result |
Athletic Bilbao (A) | 2-0 L |
St Mirren (A) | 2-2 D |
Celtic (H) | 1-1 D |
But writing for the Daily Record [10 May], Scott Burns said: “I would try for somebody like Gareth Southgate. He did well with England. He has a profile and a presence and really progressed their national team. He has also worked in a high-pressured environment where results are everything.”

Southgate could do a great job at Rangers
A move for Southgate would be an ambitious one for the Bears, as the 54-year-old guided England to the European Championship final just last summer.
An obvious shortcoming of Southgate’s is that he failed to win a trophy for the Three Lions despite steering his nation to two Euro finals, and his side were also beaten in the World Cup semi-finals and quarter-finals in 2018 and 2022, respectively.
Rangers are hoping to appoint a manager who can guide them back to glory after enduring a poor campaign in which they have failed to yield silverware this term.
But Southgate could be a top appointment for the Ibrox outfit, who largely exceeded expectations in the England dugout, especially in 2018 when his country reached the World Cup semi-finals.
No other Three Lions boss had previously guided the 54-year-old’s country to a Euros final before Southgate guided his side to that stage in 2021 and then 2024.
