Rangers backed to sign ‘powerful’ Sunderland ace amid Stadium of Light uncertainty

Rangers face a pivotal summer if they are to have any chance of catching Celtic.

The Gers are 17 points behind their arch-rivals and Brendan Rodgers’ side have already wrapped up the Scottish Premiership title.

The impending takeover by the enterprise arm of the San Francisco 49ers American Football franchise is exciting but they face huge decisions immediately once the deal is confirmed.

The future of interim manager Barry Ferguson is one task on their list but another is a major overhaul of the playing squad in the transfer market.

Rangers backed to sign Triantis amid Sunderland doubt

Paraag Marathe and Andrew Cavenagh will be keen to make an impact when they take the reins in Govan.

However, their task at Ibrox could be made harder by Financial Fair Play concerns and they may be forced to look for bargains in the market.

Daily Record journalist Scott McDermott believes that Gers should target Sunderland star Nectar Triantis, who has excelled on loan at Hibernian this season.

His future at the Stadium of Light is under question and a loan to the Light Blues makes sense if the Black Cats secure a return to the top level of English football, according to McDermott.

He said: “He’s 6ft 3ins, is a powerful runner and has the physicality to be useful in both boxes.Triantis’ future remains uncertain, with Sunderland set to recall him this summer.

“If the Black Cats are promoted to the Premier League via the play-offs, it’s likely he’ll be sent out on loan again – and there’s no doubt Hibs will be at the front of the queue.

“But if that happens, his parent club might want him to take a step up, which a move to Ibrox would certainly represent.”

Triantis deal makes sense for Rangers

The Australian midfielder is rated extremely highly by Sunderland supporters [Mackem News], and a spell at Auchenhowie may benefit all parties.

A loan move for the Hibs loanee would be a savvy piece of business for the Govan outfit, he already has experience playing in the Scottish top-flight.

The 21-year-old is a centre-back by trade but has been transformed into a holding midfielder at Easter Road and that position could be a need for the Gers in the transfer market, as the likes of Nicolas Raskin and Mohamed Diomande are set to attract significant interest in the summer.

If either one departs then it would make sense to strike some kind of deal for the Black Cats ace, as he has proven that he can cut it in Scotland already and could add the required steel to the Bears engine room.
