Steven Gerrard to Rangers ‘not ruled out’ after new manager development at Ibrox

Steven Gerrard may still be in contention to return to Rangers despite reports to the contrary at Ibrox.

Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises have had the former Gers head coach on their radar, but things seem to have changed.

Gerrard’s return to Ibrox has been ruled out as the Light Blues are looking for a new head coach with no prior connection to the Glaswegian outfit [TEAMtalk].

The Liverpool icon could potentially still be in contention to be in the Bears’ dugout next season, as a decision hasn’t been confirmed yet.

Rangers yet to make concrete manager decision as Gerrard can’t be ruled out

Gerrard shouldn’t be completely ruled out as a contender for the Gers’ job, Scott McDermott says.

The Scottish journalist believes the former Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq head coach may remain in contention as the Light Blues search for a new manager.

McDermott is reluctant to dismiss the Englishman’s return to Ibrox as the Glaswegian outfit could possibly face complications with whoever their first-choice managerial option may be.

Speaking on Hotline Live (6 May), the journalist said: “Personally, I’d be reluctant to completely rule [Gerrard] out at this stage because I don’t think there’s been any kind of concrete decisions made.

“You go for your top target. You don’t get them. You need to go to the next guy, and suddenly it can become complicated.”

Barry Ferguson future set at Ibrox as Gretar Steinsson search drags on

Gretar Steinsson is in charge at Ibrox of appointing a new permanent head coach, and it remains to be seen who he ends up hiring.

Cavenagh and the 49ers are close to completing their takeover, but they’ll need to make several key decisions once they arrive.

The appointment of a new head coach is imperative as it may also dictate the Gers’ approach in the upcoming transfer window.

Barry Ferguson’s future at Rangers seems set, as it doesn’t look like he’ll remain beyond the current campaign.

While the ex-midfielder has admitted he’d like to stay at the Light Blues, the prospective new owners may have different ideas.

The former Scotland international brought much-needed positivity among the fanbase after replacing Philippe Clement, but his domestic record since taking interim charge has been underwhelming.

With several transfer calls needing to be made on the current players at the Bears, the search for a new manager arguably can’t drag on any longer.

The US consortium should already have their replacement for Ferguson, if indeed the Gers icon will leave soon.

To compete with Brendan Rodgers, the new head coach at the Light Blues should be of high quality.
