Rangers forced to pay instalments on transfers as FFP blow emerges for 49ers

Rangers’ hopes for a big summer transfer window are fading as FFP threatens to restrict their movements.

The 49ers Enterprises’ takeover is almost complete, with hopes to strengthen the Ibrox club’s foundations, increase funding for signings and make several new appointments.

One of these appointments will include a new manager, with Barry Ferguson unlikely to be offered a permanent contract.

However, the 49ers’ aims for next season could already be at risk as transfers, new and old, venture into new territory.

Rangers to pay big-name instalments

The 49ers are already looking at bringing investment into the Scottish club with a possible sponsorship with Red Bull on the table.

Despite this, UEFA Fair Play rules will restrict the lengths the new owners can go with Rangers‘ assets, value and debt considered.

As reported by the Daily Record (6 May), Rangers will have to pay several instalments on historic transfer fees such as Mohamed Diomande, Robin Propper and Danilo this summer.

In addition to this, the Gers have had to pay off multiple managers in recent times, including Philippe Clement, who was sacked in March.

Rangers to consider several summer transfer options

Ferguson may add to the list of departures, winning only four, drawing four and losing four for Rangers.

Despite Ferguson’s potential departure, the 49ers will still need to generate revenues and income if they want to avoid further FFP restrictions.

Ticket sale income and potential qualification for European football will be a huge decider in what moves the Gers will be able to make in the upcoming summer window.

Rangers have already agreed to sign Lyall Cameron from Dundee in a move that will require a six-figure fee, and a deal for Oscar Cortes, on loan from RC Lens, with an obligation to buy, has also been struck.

It is still uncertain whether Rangers will trigger Neraysho Kasanwirjo’s £1.5million clause to sign him permanently from Feyenoord.

Kasanwirjo has not made a senior appearance for the Gers since November 2024, after injury.

Still, with the takeover almost complete and the Scottish Premiership nearing its end, the 49ers will have to think big if they want to compete with rivals Celtic next season.
