Steven Gerrard to Rangers twist as new manager appointment latest drops from Ibrox

Steven Gerrard has constantly been linked with a return to Rangers in recent weeks.

The Liverpudlian led the Gers to the Scottish Premiership title in the 2020-21 campaign and the clamour for his comeback had reached a fever pitch.

Doubts remain over Barry Ferguson’s suitability for the permanent role after a mixed run of results, leaving the door open for the 44-year-old to return.

However, a new twist has emerged from Auchenhowie on the identity of the new man in the dugout.

Gerrard appointment unlikely as Chris Jack drops Rangers update

The chances of a reunion with Gerrard has been the subject of major speculation since the 49ers takeover started to heat up.

However, Chris Jack has poured cold water on the idea of the former Light Blues boss coming back to Ibrox anytime soon.

The well-respected Rangers Review journalist claimed (6 May) that the new appointment will have no previous links to the Auchenhowie outfit.

He said: “The prospect of Steven Gerrard returning to Glasgow has reignited the debate about his successes or failures first time around.

“His name is the one that will not go away in the online debate and it is natural that the last man to guide Rangers to the title would feature prominently in the betting.

“It is understood that the appointment will be a manager with no previous involvement with Rangers. The new era will be a new beginning.”

Rangers right to avoid Gerrard

It is absolutely paramount that the new owners get the next appointment right, there is no room for mistakes given the hefty gap to Celtic.

Gerrard would have been the wrong choice, he has never faced a side as strong as Brendan Rodgers’ team, with the kind of infrastructure and funding that they have a world away from the Gers right now.

Gerrard has struggled since his Gers exit.

The squad at Ibrox is in need of a major overhaul, with the likes of Mohamed Diomande and Nico Raskin expected to attract significant attention in the transfer window.

Times journalist Michael Grant agrees with that viewpoint, he believes that the Hoops would be ecstatic if the Bears went back to the former Liverpool star.

His record since leaving Scotland, with Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq, respectively, suggest that he has not developed as a manager in that time.

Gerrard may get the club and bring a leadership that has been sorely lacking but he should be left in the past.

The 49ers should be more ambitious in their search, Gerrard has not proved much, he won the title in a down year for their Glasgow rivals and has miserably failed anywhere else.
