Ianis Hagi new contract update emerges amid Rangers twist

Ianis Hagi’s Rangers contract runs out at the end of the season and the Romanian has been linked with an exit.

The winger has struggled to establish himself as a first-team regular and also battled a number of injury problems.

While he has made 24 league appearances this season, most of them have not been from the opening whistle.

Hagi must not extend Ibrox stay, believes John McGarry

Daily Mail journalist John McGarry has admitted that, as things stand, the 26-year-old will be leaving the Ibrox outfit for good.

While no new contract has been offered to him, in his view, even if Gers are to offer Hagi a new deal, he must leave for his own benefit.

The Romania international may have 11 goals and assists to his name in the league this season, but not playing regularly is undoubtedly hindering his development.

Since moving to Ibrox in 2020, he has had headline-grabbing moments but also had a spell where he was an extremely unpopular figure at the club.

McGarry wrote: “As things stand, Leon Balogun, Ianis Hagi and Tom Lawrence will be moving on when their deals expire. Hagi has been unfortunate with injuries. Even if a new contract was now put in front of him, he needs a new challenge for the sake of his career.”

Rangers and Hagi parting ways would be beneficial for everyone

The Romanian’s potential departure from Ibrox, alongside other uninterested players, could pave the way for a revitalised era.

Hagi, a talented but inconsistent winger, has struggled to secure a consistent role under Philippe Clement or Barry Ferguson.

His loan spell at Alaves was lacklustre, and despite a recent resurgence, his contract is nearing its end and reported interest from other clubs suggest a natural exit point.

Retaining players who don’t want to stay doesn’t make sense, especially as Rangers aim to rebuild after a challenging season.

Moving on high earners like Hagi and others, such as Lawrence, whose commitment or fitness is questionable, frees up wages and squad space for dynamic, motivated signings.

This clear-out, coupled with the takeover, could inject fresh energy, align the squad with strategic goals, and restore Gers’ competitive edge in the Scottish Premiership.
