Steven Thompson gushes over ‘incredible’ Dessers moment in Rangers draw v Celtic

Steven Thompson was left speechless by Cyriel Dessers’ goal for Rangers in their Old Firm clash with Celtic at Ibrox.

Rangers have nothing left to play for, and Celtic have already won the league, leaving many to question whether today’s Old Firm was going to be a dead-rubber game, but it was far from it.

Nico Raskin thought he’d given the Gers the lead early in the game, diverting a superb cross from James Tavernier into the net before VAR ruled it out for offside, providing the visitors with that little bit of extra momentum.

However, it was Rangers that took the lead in a passage of play that left Thompson in awe at Ibrox with the Light Blues holding Celtic to a 1-1 draw.

Dessers stuns at Ibrox with finish v Celtic

Dessers has come in for a lot of stick at Rangers this season, despite the fact that he has consistently provided the goods for the Light Blues when needed, and it was no different against Celtic.

Just as Celtic were starting to grow into the game, Adam Idah was denied by Liam Kelly with a brilliant save, before Rangers launched a counterattack which was finished by Dessers in excellent fashion, leaving Thompson in awe.

Dessers has 31 goal contributions for the Light Blues this season.

Talking via BBC Radio Scotland (4 May, 12:46pm), he said: “Massive moment for Cyriel Dessers, he does so well and shows great upper body strength to hold off Liam Scales, and the finish is absolutely superb

“It’s incredible how the game just flipped there. Adam Idah should score, it’s a good save from Kelly, but from the resulting corner, Rangers breakaway.

“Cyriel Dessers, love him or loathe him, he scores goals.”

Rangers have to stick with Dessers up top

Rangers have showcased plenty of shortcomings this season, and the same can be said for Dessers, but overall, it has been a brilliant campaign for the latter, and one that should see him awarded with far more credit than he gets.

As a striker, your main objective is to score goals, and Dessers now has 25 in the current campaign for the Gers, and given the lack of quality around him throughout the season, it’s a remarkable record.

Rangers have a lot of work to do in the summer, but the search for a striker can certainly be put on hold for the time being, with Dessers far from the biggest issue at Ibrox.
